I just finished watching the episode in glorious 1080p.
I'll be honest, that was great. It may not have been the thrilling, action-packed, suspenseful climax everyone hoped for like A Canterlot Wedding, but I found it very entertaining and full of feels, and that's really the most it's trying to accomplish (Well, sell toys is another objective, but that's the extent of Hasbro's meddling). Just like some of the other 'weaker' episodes, people tend to over-analyze and make unfair comparisons and whatnot, which of course ruins their enjoyment of the show. A similar situation was when I saw the Silent Hill movie. I haven't really played through many of the games and I'm not as much of a puritan as some other fans, and I enjoyed it for what it was. The reason so many people hated it is because it wasn't faithful enough to the source material. Disregard the fact that it's based on a video game and it's a good film and story.
Back to the finale, I also think that Twilight's ascension to DAEMONHOOD - Uh, I mean alicornhood - didn't come out of nowhere and wasn't 'rushed', per se. There is a lot of indication that Celestia planned for Twilight to become the next Princess since before the series even started. The moment Twilight exploded at magic kindergarten and turned Spike into Gamera, Celestia knew she was destined to become royalty (Sun, moon, twilight... Get it?). She sent Twilight to Ponyville so she could learn the skills and abilities necessary to become a Princess, with these five other paragons of harmony. Also, Twilight defeated Nightmare Moon, an Ursa Minor, Discord, and helped to vanquish Chrysalis and Sombra. It's about time she got some kind of reward.
